Bjarne Melgaard’s former business partners won in Oslo District Court

We recently assisted Stein Lie and Svein Roar Grande in an extensive legal dispute against the artist Bjarne Melgaard. The trial took place in Oslo District Court in October 2024, and the court has now handed down a judgment in the case.

Case Background

The case basically concerns an agreement entered into in 2020 that was supposed to resolve all outstanding issues between the parties. Melgaard filed a lawsuit to set aside the agreement as unfair, but the court supported our clients’ position and confirmed that the agreement was still binding.

Oslo District Court’s assessment

The District Court’s main conclusion is that Melgaard’s claims for the return of works of art, loss of production rights and compensation are unsuccessful. At the same time, all of Lie’s counterclaims were successful. In addition, Melgaard had to pay Lie and Grande’s legal costs. In the judgment, Melgaard was ordered to pay a total of NOK 12.4 million.

Stein Lie and Svein Roar Grande are very satisfied with the verdict Oslo District Court has now handed down. The court has based its decision on Lie and Grande’s view of the relationship with Melgaard and the agreements entered into. None of Melgaard’s claims for the return of works of art, loss of production rights and compensation have been successful. At the same time, all of Lie’s counterclaims have been successful.

Throughout the process, Hjort has assisted Grande and Lie with legal advice and representation in court. Hjort partner Alex Borch has been counsel in the case, while associate Silje Fredwall was legal assistant.
